07/26/01 - Fred Meyer Must Pay for Polluting Creek - The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has levied a $104,572 penalty against Fred Meyer for twice discharging fuel into a tributary of the Clackamas River, and for failing to monitor underground storage tanks at a distribution center.  DEQ said the discharges into Carli Creek last year originated from a leaking underground storage tank system at Fred Meyer's distribution center in Clackamas.  Most of the penalty - $84,725 - was levied against the grocery and merchandise retailer for failing to remove diesel fuel from groundwater that led to the discharges, the DEQ said.

Fred Meyer has until Aug. 6 to appeal the penalty.  Fred Meyer officials could not be reached for comment.  Source: July 26, 2001 Eugene Register Guard.
