| Our Goal: To improve the livability of Florence through public education and community involvement. | |
On May 15, 2000, the Florence City Council approved an application to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) for a grant of $2.142 million. The project being proposed is something the city is euphemistically calling an "extension" of Oak Street. According to the application, the total project will cost $3.57 million. That means the City of Florence will be paying $1.428 million. This amount does not include the reconstruction of the existing Oak Street stormwater system, which may not be large enough to handle more stormwater.
The application also mentions another planned extension of Oak Street which is not addressed in this funding request:
"Oak Street is presently constructed between 21st Street and 37th Street. The draft Comprehensive Plan and the draft TSP include provision for the development of Oak Street between 10th and 21st Streets".Miller Park is located between 15th and 20th Streets. The Oak Street "right-of-way" is currently being used as a bike/pedestrian path which borders Miller Park on the east side.
This eventual full development of Oak Street from 10th street north
to 37th Street is described in the draft Comprehensive Plan and the draft
Transportation Systems Plan, both of which are currently being reviewed
by the City Council.
