    Cannery Dune

    The dune is alive.
Sand is still moving back and forth,
    north and south,
    over and over again,
    through the years.
Thousands of years of shifting sand.
Massive dunes that once marched from Coos Bay to the headlands.
Sand that once lay under waves,

thrust upward by powerful geological forces.
Dunes slowly cut off from their replenishing ocean source.
    Yet, still a dune remains.
    The last one, still active,

still shifting and changing in the wind.

    The sands shift and move.

Sculptures form under the artist's unseen hand.
    Beauty to see.
    Shapes and shadows to astound,

then to disappear overnight for a new display in the morning.
    Thousands of years,
    sands of time,
    deep and dense,
    light and free.
Reminding us of the small hourglass

holding the sands of our lifetime.
    Strange partners.
    Sand and water.
Yet they have always been together.
Once, the sand moved under the oceans.
Now, the ocean drifts over the dunes, casting shadows,
    flowing down as rain,
running below and through the depths of the sand,
finding its way back to the ocean,
    showing its reflective face sometimes,
    rising above the sand,
    and pure.
