Recall Brubaker Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 15, 2007

RECALL PETITIONS SUBMITTED

Petitions, signed by more than 700 Florence voters, will place on the ballot the question of whether or not Florence will retain or replace its current mayor.

Jay Goodwin, chief petitioner, said the signature gathering was a slow process due to, in part, what he termed ‘fear of retribution’.  "There were a significant number of people,” said Goodwin, “who said they would vote against the mayor in an election, but were afraid to sign the petition because it might have a negative effect on their business or dealings with city hall." said Goodwin.

“No one ran against the mayor in the last election. The only other choice people had was to not vote at all - -  a so-called ‘vote of silence’.   That’s not much of a choice.  In a democracy, with the exception of recent city council meetings, votes of silence carry no weight. With this election, voters will be able to vote yes, or no.” said Goodwin, “Some people raised concerns about the
cost to the city for an election.  A figure of $10,000 has been tossed around by city officials.” said Goodwin.  “But, Lane County Elections officials have estimated that election costs to the City of Florence would be between $3,000 to $4,000.”  Last month a local resident pledged to reimburse the City up to $10,000 for cost of the election.

“Once the signatures have been verified by Lane County Elections, the Mayor has the option of either stepping down, or forcing the City to hold an election,” said Goodwin.

“In the last few years, the Mayor has given voters a better idea of where he intends to take Florence.  It’s up to the voters now to decide if they want to see Florence continue down the same path, or if they want Florence to head in a new direction.”
